Flight QF24 from Bangkok was forced to land in Cairns at around 5.45am, where several police officers were waiting to escort the man off the plane.
He was reportedly held by two plainclothes officers on the plane for several hours, and could be heard shouting and swearing even after he was moved out of economy.
A one point, passengers heard the man shout “turn off the fucking light cunt”.
An air hostess said the man, thought to be in his mid-twenties, had broken all four sets of “flexi-cuffs” on board
Qantas confirmed that the plane was forced to land because of an “intoxicated passenger”.
“Qantas has a zero tolerance approach to antisocial behaviour on our aircraft,” the airline said.
It was expected to land in Sydney at 9.15am local time — two-and-a-half hours late.
Last month, a drunk passenger on an Air India flight from Melbourne to New Delhi was tied to his seat after he tried to rip clothes off cabin crew and bite other passengers.
A Sunwing Airlines flight from Canada to Cuba was turned back to Toronto after female passengers got in a fight, lit a cigarette and made threats against the aircraft.
In March, a Delta Air Lines flight from Georgia to Costa Rica had to make an emergency landing in the Cayman Islands after two newlyweds’ celebrations turned into a drunken row. The bride was arrested for being drunk and disorderly upon landing.
In some such situations, airlines have applied for diversion costs, which can amount to tens of thousands of dollars.
