My Droid 1 was sluggish. When I tapped an icon, I was always prepared to wait about 10 seconds before the device would do anything. When an incoming call came to the phone, I would swipe to unlock the screen and then miss the call because it took so long. I mentioned to a friend that I was looking into getting a new phone because I could no longer tolerate the speed issues. He suggested that the device memory may be the problem. At first I couldn’t understand why this would be an issue. I thought a 16GB SD card would provide enough memory. To my surprise, the SD card memory was different from the internal system memory.
I checked how much memory I was using under Settings > SD card & phone storage > Internal phone storage > Available space. I only had about 10MB free. My friend suggested increasing memory space by removing items that are utilized by the device memory, including:
- Uninstalling unused apps. (Settings > Applications > Manage applications > app name > Uninstall)
- Moving apps to the SD card. (Settings > Applications > Manage applications > app name > Move to SD card)
- Deleting text message threads. (Tap and hold thread > Delete)
- Clearing unused data out of third-party applications.
